Potentate El Karubah 2017
As many of you know, the fraternity now known around the world as Shriners International all started in 1870 with a group of Masons who frequently met in a place called Knickerbocker Cottage in New York just to eat and socialize. This group of Masons would frequently meet for lunch and other social activities and enjoyed each other's camaraderie so much they thought others might want to join in on the fun. This lead to the forming of a fraternity that was based on the principles of fun and fellowship more so than business and ritual. Being good Masons, this group also believed in the principles of charity and being good citizens by helping others. As such, the group looked for opportunities and ways that they could work together to help others in their community and around the country. In the early years they offered support to assist with the cleanup and aid after national disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and fires. Almost 50 years after the fraternity started they decided to combine their efforts into helping crippled children and began planning to open a children's hospital. I am proud to say the leaders of El Karubah Shrine were successful in opening the world's first Shriners Hospital for Children here in Shreveport, Louisiana. As you may know, this has grown into what we now refer to as the World's Greatest Philanthropy and we now have 22 hospitals that treat a wide variety of illnesses and conditions that affect children. There is no greater joy for a Shriner than to know he helped a child walk for the first time or helped in some other way to put a smile on a child's face.
Let me first say thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as Potentate of El Karubah. It is an honor and privilege. Everyone should have a Motto and mine for this year is: Leaping Forward to Build and Unite the Future. For those that don't know me here is a little of my history I served 22 years in the USAF where I held many roles in the Medical Field from working on inpatient units to being the only Medical, Dental, or Veterinary person on a 300 person radar site on top of a mountain in Iceland. The Air Force taught me a style of leadership that is quite different than what is used in civilian life but effective in some situations. The main item gained was not to be afraid of conflict. After retiring from the Air Force I went to work at the VA Hospital in Shreveport where I spent 23 years working in a variety of supervisory positions and finally retired as chief of the Business Office. I feel I have the background and experience to serve this year as Potentate of El Karubah Temple. My goals this year are high and need your support to accomplish. I want to increase activity within our current membership by providing events that you are interested in. In order to do so I need your input. If there is something you would like to see happen let me know what it is, the date you want to put it on the calendar for and we will get it done if at all possible. For the first time in many, many years our membership is below 1,000 members. I want to increase our membership with individuals who want to get involved and add to restoring the foundation of the Temple. Any Noble this year that is the first line signature on three or more new nobles, their dues will be paid for next year. I want to reach out to the Masonic Lodges and explain our goals and what we have to offer. I plan on having a Shrine Mason Event and invite all organizations that have grown out of Masonry. I would also like to reach out to the individual lodges to let them know what we do. In order to accomplish this I need the support of the Units within El Karubah. If you need help I will gladly try to assist you. Nothing grows as an organization if no one knows you exist or what you do and stand for. I want to support our Shrine Hospitals and organize fund raisers to provide financial support to that philanthropy. If you have an idea for a fund raiser let's get it started through the approval process and do it. Sometimes the approval process is lengthy so if you have an idea with the goal being to raise funds for Shriners Hospital for Children please let us know as early as possible. These are my goals but your elected Divan and your elected officers cannot accomplish these goals on our own we need the input, involvement and help of all Nobles to achieve any of them. Please let me again end my message by saying if you have an idea or an event that you would like to see at El Karubah let one of the Divan know and we will get it done. It is our temple and together we can keep it strong. Without input and new ideas and events even the strongest of organizations fall. Lets keep everyone happy and involved and El Karubah Temple will be successful.
