Daughters of the Nile is a fraternal, benevolent organization for women who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or another Daughter of the Nile. The order was founded on October 30, 1913 in Seattle, WA by 22 progressive women for the purpose of character building, social interaction and service to others. Daughters of the Nile was founded upon the belief in the Fatherhood of God and the Sisterhood of Women and its most vital tenets are charity, friendship and truth. Presently there are 148 Temples with over 39,000 members in the U.S. and Canada.
In 1924 Daughters of the Nile received permission from the Imperial Shrine Headquarters to embrace the Shrine Hospitals as its philanthropy. Daughters of the Nile contributes over 1 ½ millions dollars annually to the hospitals in cash and well over that amount in volunteer services. The overall total contributions reach well over three million dollars annually.
The official emblem of the order is a green scimitar imprinted with the words “Daughters of the Nile” and a suspended golden crescent which has a sphinx head in the top center and is crossed by the official flower of the order which is a white rose. The official seal is the emblem of the order within a circle, and the official colors of the order are green, gold and white.
The Supreme Temple has jurisdiction over all of the subordinate temples. The Supreme Queen or CEO for 2008 is Muriel V. Knapp. Supreme Sessions are held annually during the second full week in June in order to conduct the business of the organization and elect new Supreme officers. The location for a Supreme Sessions is determined by the incoming Supreme Queen-elect. A closed crown is worn by the Supreme Queen denoting her position. Queens of subordinate Temples wear an open crown of the Temple's choice.
